The American Military is planning to let female troops work in jobs that are closer to areas where troops are involved in combat.The Defense department officials say the changes would open about 14,000 jobs to women. Female service members would be permitted to serve as medical workers and intelligence officers. These are jobs that have been considered too dangerous for women. The changes mainly affects women in the Army and the Marine Corps. Women would still be barred from serving in infantry, armour and special operations. Congress may decide to delay the move or block it before it takes effect. At least 144 female service members have been killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And more than 850 have been wounded.

Iran's top leader warned Friday that his country will answer measures designed to harm Iran's oil industry and threats of attack by Israel. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Western supported oil sanction will have no effect on Iran's decision to continue its nuclear program. American media have reported that Defense Secretary Leon Pannetta fears that Israel could strike Iran in the next few months.

I hve learned that there is a popular blog named "BoingBoing" through VOA Special English program. I thought that the name is very interesting because "Boin(g)"（ボイン） means a ~~glamorous~~ buxom woman in Japanese slang.

But recently we have rarely heard the word so it might have been becoming "shigo"（死語）, in my directly translation, "a dead word". Now younger people use "kyo-nyu"（巨乳） to express a ~~glamorous~~ buxom woman.

Japanese language, especially in slang, has always been changing.

Protesters in Moscow have demonstrated against the likely return of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to the presidency next month. The protesters covered their cars in white materials and drove around the city. Organizers say as many as three thousand cars took part. The protesters drove around a major highway that surrounds the capital. People without cars stood along the road and waved white cloths. Local police say three hundred cars took part in the protest.

Yesterday, I climbed a mountain named "Misokobushi-yama"（みそこぶしやま） in the Kujyu（久住） mountain area with my friends. The main purpose of the climbing was to cheer up one of friends who had been shocked by some reason.

After short rest at a log cabin of the member, we started climbing. Unfortunately it was cloudy, but we could enjoy the great view of the area with good conversation.

A top Iranian official says Iran will launch a second uranium enrichment center later this month. The new center was built below ground and is well protected from possible air attacks by countries opposed to Iran's nuclear program. The head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization said late Saturday that uranium gas will be injected into centrifuges at the Fordo Enrichment Center before February 1st. Iran reported the existence of the center to the United Nations Nuclear Agency in 2009. It is under a mountain near the Shi'ite holy city of Qom. In China, the brother of the lawyer, Gao Zhisheng says the famous dissident is being held in the Shaya County Prison in the far western province of Xinjiang. Gao Zhiyl said that he had received official notice of a Beijing court decision on Sunday. Gao Zhisheng had been missing for more than 18 month until state media reported last month that he had been sent back to prison for three years. The activist lawyer had earlier reported that he had been kidnapped and tortured by Chinese officials. He was sentenced to three years in prison 2006 for inciting subversion. I have learned that PM Noda visited India from this program. Now, his party are facing serious problem that several politicians have left the Japanese Democratic Party in opposition to a plan to rise rate of consumer tax in the future.

Asahi says that two countries have confirmed that they make an effort to agree to corporate on a development of nuclear power. But, I cannot agree this Japan's policy because I think that Japan should consider all policies on the use of nuclear power after Fukushima.

I have finished reading a book written by "Genyu Soukyu"（玄侑宗久） who is a Buddhist priest in Fukushima and a winner of the Akutagawa prize（芥川賞）. The title of the book is "Fukushima ni ikiru"（福島に生きる）.

He writes about the difficult situation that people in Fukushima have faced. He also writes about his decision to fight it with them.

I have again recognized that we are facing at a very difficult problem. We have never experienced it in the past.

He says in the book that he has started a foundation that has supported people who have been in bad situation. The foundation's name is "Tamakiawaru-Fukushima-Kikin."(たまきはる福島基金).

"Tonakai" is a basic meat in Alaska

Reindeer is a well-known animal in Japan that Santa Clause uses to transport gifts children. It is translated as "Tonakai"（トナカイ） into Japanese, but I don't know the origin of the name.

Today, I have learned that reindeer is a basic meat in Alaska through the VOA Special English program. At first, I could not understand this part in it, "children might want to cover their ears for this part", but later I found out it.

"Why do children want to cover reindeer's ears?", first I thought. After considering it, I got to an idea that means "子供たちは、この部分については、耳を覆いたくなるかもしれない。＝子供たちは、このことは聞きたくないかも知れないが".

There are similar stories in the world. Those include that some people in Japan eat a meat of dolphin and some Korean eat dog's meat. And I have heard that people in Britain usually eat a meat of rabbit. They look very similar things to me, but there are many critics against eating dolphin and dog. I do not know why those differences happen on those issues.

A Japanese automaker is planning to help a Canadian mining company speed their development of rare earth metals. Toyota announced on Tuesday it has signed an agreement with Matamec Explorations. The agreement offers Toyota some of the metals it needs to cars that do not use gasoline. The mine's chief officer said Toyota will buy everything the mine produces. Rare earth metals are a set of 17 chemical elements that are not rare. But they are usually found in amounts that do not make them financially valuable. China currently produces almost all rare earth elements.

I stop in at a cafe named "Tsujiri"（辻利）once or two times a week to listen to VOA Special English programs recorded in my IC recorder after working.. It is only about 20 minutes, but I am not bothered by anything, enjoying good foods there, so it is my favorite time.

Tsujiri serves "matcha"（抹茶） and "matcha dessert" like green tea ice cream.

Last Friday, I ordered "kuro-mame-warabi" and "sencha" set（黒豆わらびと煎茶セット）. "Warabi"(わらび or わらび餅） was not too sweet, very delicious.

A leading Japanese food manufacturer says the radioactive metal cesium has been discovered in its baby food. The Meiji Company said Tuesday that it has launched an immediate recall of 400,000 containers of powdered baby milk. The company said the level of cesium were well below government safety limits. The Meiji company said it volunteered the recall. And it said it is not sure how the substance got into its powdered milk. But it says it suspects it came from the Fukushima-Daiich power Plant in March. The plant was struck by the earthquake and tsunami. Cesium cannot be seen, tasted or smelled.

The center of world economy has been changing, I think from recent news. Most people have recognized that it is in US or Europe now. But, it may move to China, India or Brazil in the future.

Arms control experts are disputing a study that claims China may have many more nuclear weapons than officials estimate. A professor of Georgetown University and his students say China could have up to 3,000 nuclear warheads hidden in underground passways. The official estimate is that there are only 250. Professor Philip Kerber's report has started a dispute among experts on China's nuclear weapons. The professor is a former official at the American Defense Department. He has not answered calls from VOA. Gregory Kulacki, a researcher at the Union of Concerned Scientists told VOA the group's research methods are irresponsible, incompetent and lazy. Recently, Trans-Pacific Partnership is the talk of Japanese. If it starts, price of many things in Japan is expected to change. Most of Japanese industries have got their profit from export, so may businesses have welcomed it. But, many farmers are opposing it because their products will lose to low imported products in price. Privately, I welcome low-priced imports, but at the same time I am really anxious about ruin of Japan's farming.

The British Medical Association has urged the government to ban smoking in private cars at all times to protect people from the risk of second-hand smoke. Britain already bans smoking in public vehicles such as buses and trains. There is no law against smoking in private cars. The government banned smoking in public places such as restaurants in 2007. That has avoided smoking bans for private areas. Some countries including Australia, Canada and parts of the United States have already banned smoking in cars when children are present. Siegfried Blunk of Germany accused the Cambodian government of interfering with a work of the court. The court released a statement Monday. Yesterday, I climbed a mountain named "Houman-zan"(宝満山)　with friends. The mountain locates near the Dazaifu-Tenmangu （太宰府天満宮） in Dazaifu-city, Fukuoka prefecture. It is popular among people who live in Fukuoka area, so we saw a lot of people on the top of the mountain.

It was a little bit hard for me to get to the top because the route to its top was formed by rocky stairs and the temperature was higher than I expected. But I could enjoy this activity under a fine day.
